TUNE-A-DAY!

Post by Brendan » Thu Jan 04, 2018 2:26 pm

Along with other more conventional New Year Resolutions (like losing weight, stopping drinking for January etc), I decided to upload a fresh music track to a dedicated Tune-a-Day page on my website every day. I think I have enough recorded tracks to last all of 2018; if not, I'll have to record new ones!

The tune/song might be from past albums, or a track that's never come out publicly before. I'll be posting them on Facebook, but here is the direct link:

Today's one is #3 in the series: 'Laura's Happy Tune'. This is a song I wrote for my partner Laura, whose birthday it is today :-)

Brendan, love your tune-a-day resolution!

all write-ups are interesting and i particularly enjoyed today's on "Lament for the 21st century"!

I'm curious what this alternate PC tuning you mention is?!?!

Thanks!

Hi Paris, it's basically PowerChromatic with one note change. If you think of it made from a C chrom in key of G, the A notes in normal PowerChromatic are taken down to G:

CD EF# GA GB | CD EF# GA GB | CD EF# GA GB
(Slider raises all notes a semitone).

The harp on the track is in D, and this gives the big bends on the F# draw note that you hear. I use this tuning in Jig Jazz as well:

Wow, thanks for the explanation! I see now that you show this variation in the geek zone:)
that explains why, when i try to play along with jig jazz, my chording always sounds slightly off...haha!
definitely going to try this variation. Thanks Brendan!

TUNE-A-DAY #38: Sally Gardens (Air & Reel)
Two very different but attractive tunes with a similar name, it seemed natural to put them together.

Harmonicas: AsiaBend on the air, Slide Diatonic in Paddy Solo Tuning on the reel
