New Album: UNADORNED

Post by Brendan » Mon Feb 12, 2018 1:03 am

24 Years after New Irish Harmonica, a return to traditional Irish music, using some of the new types of harmonica I've developed in the intervening period.

Hi Brendan,

I just got me a download copy. It had been just running in the background, while I wrote this. :)
Sounds nice. Interesting is the mix of Chinese style and Irish tunes on some of the tracks. Not that you were the first to do so - Chieftains did it since long ago - but now also on the harmonica. And I like it. Anyway - all in all I think, this is the way Irish tunes should be played on the harmonica nowadays - or at least one very good way to do so. It gives me a direction in which I can exercise myself.

One request: Please could you tell, which harmonica you used on each track (type, tuning, key, position)? Would be nice and would make it more easy to try to play the one or the other tune by oneself. (*)

And here some special questions to some of the tunes:

track 01 - The Dawning of the day: How was the drone played / which instrument?

track 05 - The Glen of Aherlow: There is a low acompaniement to a higher pitched tune. Did you play it in two voices on one harp by tongue splits? Or is it a two track recording? Or is it done by two harpers at one time?
And by the way: Is this a kind of a "slow reel", or how is this type of tune called? ("Slow reel" sounds to me like an inherent contradiction. :))

track 07 - Down by the Sally Gardens: On what instrument did you the drone? Is it any harmonica too?

Now the last tune has just faded out.
Fine done.
'nuff said.

dear greetings
triona

edit 1:
*) on two I think, I have identified the Asiabend:
track 4 - Skibbereen and track 12 - the parting glass
Guess why! :D

edit 2:
And "Sally Gardens" (air + reel) I have discovered in the other thread. :)
Sounds to me like any D or Bm - at least the air. With the reel I'm not really certain with this.
Aw, Thou beloved, do hearken to the Banshee's lonely croon!
sinn féin - ça ira !
Cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
