Question about length of chamber

Anything apart from the two mainstream default harmonicas (Solo-tuned fully-valved chromatic, and un-valved Richter 10-hole diatonic). Alternate tunings, different construction, new functionality, interesting old designs, wishful-thinking... whatever!

Question about length of chamber

Post by IaNerd » Tue Dec 12, 2017 7:00 pm

Combs are fashioned such that each chamber is only as long as is needed to have the reed swing freely. What happens when a chamber is longer than that?

I believe that having a comb slot that is overly large for the reed AND the pitch of the note would result in some response and tuning issues. This is the main reason why Brendan made smaller chambers in his custom combs and using the power plugs.

Correct - lengthening the chamber will detune the reed, and eventually stop it sounding altogether.
