Memorization

Anything apart from the two mainstream default harmonicas (Solo-tuned fully-valved chromatic, and un-valved Richter 10-hole diatonic). Alternate tunings, different construction, new functionality, interesting old designs, wishful-thinking... whatever!

Memorization

Post by madden » Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:14 am

Im interested to know how you started out memorizing songs at the beginning or even now for that manner. I imagine as u progress ur able to play by ear, but as I play now I find myself memorizing the tablature, listening to it played a lot and then slowly I begin adding some groove or rhythm. Don’t know if I’m going about it correctly but I’ve noticed that’s what I’m doing. Thank you for any input or advice always appreciate advice from more advanced players which is pretty much everyone :)

I'm an ear player. I tried teaching myself to sight read a few times over the years, and can use the dots (very slowly) to help resolve the correct notes in a certain passage, but I'll only resort to them rarely.

I memorise by simple repetition, going over and over a phrase until it feels flowing and natural, and then linking it to the next one. I never learned from tablature, but if visualising it helps you memorise parts, then good! Use whatever works.
