A less-than-half-baked idea:
Instead of a push-button slide mechanism shifting airflow to a different set of reed plates, could the slide instead duplicate particularly difficult tongue-blocks on an otherwise standard (i.e. non-double-reed) harmonica?

I don't quite get what you're after. Could you give one or more examples of what you would like to achieve?
I ask because I mostly play with tongue-blocking.

My new OctaHarp Selectable could be configured in a way to give desired extra notes that kick in with a slide push. It's intended for octave play but the rear harp could be a fifth below, for example.
Or you could go to a lot of trouble and tune the rear harp so it gave a variety of intervals depending on what hole you chose.
That's the only mechanical way I can think of doing it at present.
