Recent Live Videos and their Harmonicas

Post by Brendan » Fri May 18, 2018 11:06 am

We can get a bit dry on this forum talking about tunings, slides, rocker-arms and other technical stuff, but it's good to remember that these things are all just means to an end: to play the music we love in a pleasing way! In the case of this forum, they are alternate approaches that can hopefully make harp playing easier (and arguably more 'musical') than with stock Richter and Solo harmonicas.

In this thread I'll post some clips from a recent live performance in Denmark featuring some of the harmonicas I currently use, as examples of what they sound like and can do.

I'M A HARMONICA MAN
Played with the brilliant multi-instrumentalist Jacob Venndt on chord and chromatic harmonica, I'm using PowerBender half-valved 10 and 13 hole harps.

TWO IRISH REELS
With Laura Jowers on rhythm bones, I'm playing a half-valved Slide Diatonic in Paddy Solo tuning:

THE CHOPPED-UP ONION BLUES
The harp here is a home-made prototype of the Lucky 13, a Stretch-Harp made by joining a Suzuki SUB30 main part to a Hohner Thunderbird bottom end, in PowerBender tuning. It's nice having that extra low octave for this kind of solo unaccompanied playing.

Don't make it to Denmark much but looks like a show I wish I could have been at! Love the details on the harps and tunings! Starting to think I might need to make myself a Paddy Solo harp!
These performances bring to mind how impotant it is - at least for me - to create "finished products". Often times practicing can lead me down strange musical paths, which can be fun and exctiting BUT practicing with the intent of adding a tune to my performable repetoire can be helpful!

Very inspiring Brendan!
