Re: Spanish tuning

That's great to hear, Triona!

Hope to hear about what your guitarist friend has to say about the Spanish tuning and its possible uses in different music traditions!

Cheers,
Karl

Re: Spanish tuning

Hi Triona, I've never tried the Spanish tuned harmonica, but looking at your questions, I can confirm that your first 2 question could be answered by "Yes" in both cases. The diagrams below seem to be all correct, only that "B" and "Bb" are confused in one place (A/Bb tuning), which I suppose is due...

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

I just felt I needed to present clearer diagrams of some ideas, and also compare to other existing designs. So here are diagrams of standard tunings (and the chords that go with them) such as Richter, Paddy Richter, Melody Maker and some variations with circular tunings in different keys. Might give...

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

I was thinking of this "reversed" circular tuning suggested by IaNerd, that is having the basic layout of a C harp, but retuning F to F#, thereby converting it to a G harp, with the tonic chord at draw holes 1-4, typical for 2nd position playing, so I started to configure the chord layout. It came o...

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

I've been thinking about that actually, and I would change both F's to F#, which would turn the key of the whole scale from C to G major. The chords would be: G major (I), a minor (ii), b minor (iii), C major (IV), D major (V), e minor (vi) and finally the dreadful f# dim (vii). It's like the Melody...

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

Hi Kniri!

Interesting table you have there. Very good for chords playing. That table is a bit hard to read though, due to formatting, so I took the liberty to paste the text in a text editor, and take a screenshot. Here you go:

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

As stated, this tuning, that could be called ladder of thirds, circle of thirds, spiral tuning, circular tuning, etc., is not new as I suspected from the beginning. It comes all natural, of course. However, I'd like to expand a bit on the fine-tuning for intonation. This paragraph is pretty basic fo...

Re: A family of new modded-Richter tunings

Example of a well-known tune that goes like that? I tried the chords on guitar, and it didn't ring a bell, so to speak... Sounds nice though.

Re: Circle of thirds variation of Richter tuning

Absolutely correct, Winslow. Spiral tuning goes all the way from first to last hole, read more about it here: http://www.bluesharmonica.de/english/sp ... uning.html

Nothing new under the sun, eh...

Kind of beautiful, though, isn't it?

Re: A family of new modded-Richter tunings

Beyond me, really. I suppose that extra F chord makes it work for 2 keys. In your example case, C (with C, F, G) and G (with G, C, D). That is, the I, IV and V chords, respectively. And in G you could do that kind of bluesy chugging changes between G (I) and F (bVII). I would keep the F chord, makes...
