Lucky 13 Paddy Richter and Tequila

Post by Alan » Fri Nov 16, 2018 5:53 pm

Several years ago I was playing with a band with a saxophone player. The band called out the song Tequila which has a classic saxophone riff and he didn't know it! I muddled through on diatonic but it wasn't great.

I just got my Lucky 13 Paddy Richter and discovered with these I can play those riffs in three octaves with no bends, including a nice tongue split octave version on the low end. Not Irish music but still fun.

233-2-3-232
233-2-3-23 (twice)

2-2343 (three times)

-3 (x6) 2

TEQUILA!

Nice
Thanks for posting it.
I’ve tried a few tunings, all have been my favorite at one time or another but I keep going back to Paddy Richter, for all kinds of music. It just feels natural somehow, even with the silly upper octave.

Re. the upper octave, I suggest retune it to something you prefer. On my Paddy harps I retune them to Paddy Solo. Double the root note on holes 7 & 8 and lower 8, 9 blow accordingly. But leave the draw notes the same.

Thus is my preferred tuning for Irish playing, but it will work well for other styles too.

Or you could retune the top end to PowerDraw. However an easier way to do that is retune a PowerDraw Lucky 13 to Paddy in the lower two octaves.

There are many other combinations you could try as well :-)

Should not be that:

CD EG AB CD EF GA CB CD EF GA

is the layout for Paddy Solo, as stated by Brendan here: http://brendan-power.com/harpgeeks.php

which means that blow holes 8-9-10 should be lowered from E-G-C to C-E-G, respectively, compared to Paddy Richter.

I retuned a harmonica like that once,I didn’t really give it much of a chance and went back to regular Paddy Richter. I play around with a couple of variations of Paddy Richter and a couple Pentatonic tunings, 4key and pentabender and enjoy them. Someday I may even get good at playing one lol.
Lately I am spending more time with the Paddy based tunings. But I am fickle.
