PowerBender key choice

Post by Malarz » Sun Jun 21, 2020 8:54 pm

I’ve just come up against a tune in Gm/Bb. I was trying it both on XB-40 in G and PowerChromatic in G. I had trouble getting all the notes on those two harps. My bending ability is not yet where I want it to be. Which key of PowerBender might be a better choice? I know its not too long before I get one in most of the 12 keys.
Thanks.

I should add I went to a chromatic in G to solve that problem but I’d like to be able to play more tunes on the diatonics.

Well, I just found all the notes on the PC in G. Now its only practice and getting more competent and comfortable with the bends.

I would choose an Eb PowerBender for Gm/Bb. 5th Position is really nice on the PowerBender. That's what I'm using on the Will Wilde video:

Also listen to the last track on the PowerBender demo from 8:25:

the track is in Em; Will is playing an A harp in 2nd Position, I'm playing a C harp in 5th Position.

Which one is correct now?

Re: PowerBender key choice; Recommendation of Lucky 13 Model

@Marlaz,

I would also recommend the Lucky 13 version of the Eb PowerBender.
I recently purchased the same one myself to work on Taj Mahal's "Leavin' Trunk, which is in Bb.
As you go above the key of C on those harps, it is even easier to work the three bass notes. Loads of fun.

Also, I am glad you are working on the PB tuning as well. I am currently trying to set up a way to easily hop on Zoom and get good quality sound. Maybe we can chat on there when I get it going, and I can give you some insight on some of the things I like to do in that tuning and on the PC tuning as well. Do you have any capacity to do that?

Hi Triona,

You're right to point out I wasn't quite clear. I am playing a C Powerbender in Em (5th Position) on the Will Wilde tune, and I recommend an Eb PowerBender for playing in Gm (5th Position).

Aha, thank you for clarification. That sounds more logical.

Thanks to you all for continuing this discussion and my education. Now I’m waiting for the PB instruction manual and PB in A package.

@Brendan, thanks for the recommendation to use Eb for the Gm/Bb tunes. I’ll put in an order for the Lucky 13 PB in that key and then probably a few more. I love that low end on the PowerChromatic.

@Sachlaw, thanks for the invitation. I’ll send you a PM.

Thanks again to all for guiding me through this new world of harp playing!
