Amplified Harmonica with the iPad

Anything apart from the two mainstream default harmonicas (Solo-tuned fully-valved chromatic, and un-valved Richter 10-hole diatonic). Alternate tunings, different construction, new functionality, interesting old designs, wishful-thinking... whatever!

Amplified Harmonica with the iPad

Post by rishio » Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:35 pm

I’ve always been thinking about a more flexible and simple way of using the iPad for live performance and studio recording with the harmonica. Brenden Power’s series on the iPad help solidify this direction and inspired me to take the next step. I’m now Amp free and have a setup that all fits in my 20 Liter backpack. When I want to play intimate environments, or just jam on my own with backing tracks, I have everything I need with me. If I need further amplification, I can always plug into a PA. If I want to make a recording, the same setup works, minus the speaker. With the iPad, there is no latency (or it’s so low, that it’s imperceptible)

What surprised me is that this small little speaker has a really nice tone and gives out bigger volume than one might expect! It sounds better than my previous amp - at least for my style of music making.

Anyone else use the iPad + speaker combo for live playing rather than an amp with the harmonica?

Hi rishio. I haven't tried it, but it's a good idea, so I'll give it a try.
