Diagrams of well-known tunings

Anything apart from the two mainstream default harmonicas (Solo-tuned fully-valved chromatic, and un-valved Richter 10-hole diatonic). Alternate tunings, different construction, new functionality, interesting old designs, wishful-thinking... whatever!

"Canned Heat" tuning, cross harp key of G

Post by IaNerd » Fri Oct 13, 2017 3:45 pm

‘On the Road Again’ was recorded by the American blues-rock group Canned Heat in 1967.

The distinctive harmonica solo first played by Alan ‘Blind Owl’ Wilson utilizes a special tuning adjustment. Played on a harp in key A in cross/2nd position E, adjustments to draw reed 6 are made by raising the pitch of the reed a semi-tone from F#-G.

I show it below in Cross key of G (for comparison with other tunings) and also in Wilson’’s Cross key of E.

Notes of the Blues Scale in G: G — A#/Bb — C — C#/Db — D — F — G (one octave)

I Gmaj yes, x2 (one with 7th) and partial, x1
ii Amin no
iii Bmin no
IV Cmaj yes, x7
V Dmaj no
vi Emin yes, but partial, x3
vii F#dim yes, but partial, x2
--------------------------------
Also: Bbmaj (inv.), Fmin (partial)

In First Position Key of C (Second Position Key of G)
