What to seal combs with.

Post by Andrew » Sun Apr 30, 2017 9:18 am

Hello, I live in Ireland and was looking for something safe to seal a wood comb with. All the food safe sealants seem to be scarce in this country. Any suggestions. The comb I'm sealing is for a Marine Band 364 in low D. Also any suggestions for anyone who does custom harpwork in Ireland? Thanks

You can seal the comb with walnut oil. Take only a little amount. Just rub it in with a soft cloth and take away the excess, leaving a thin coat. It is air-drying. It will not turn rancid. The drying time is about 1 week. Repeat the procedure every now and then.

I think it must be to get in Ireland too. If not, buy in any web shop within the EU.

Food grade mineral oil and bees wax are 2 things I have used. Both readily available in the USA, don't know about where you live. The bees wax, I got online from Amazon, the mineral oil was available in drug stores/pharmacies.

Bees wax is certainly a good advice too, from which I already have heard of.
Should be available in Ireland too.

I use shellac....all natural once the carrier agents dry and not much if any smell or taste immediately after drying...I bake mine on super low heat on a cookie sheet with aluminum foil for a very little bit to cure the last coat....I have also heard a woman's hair dryer on even heat will do this....just a trick I was taught

As an alternative idea, I'll be releasing some 3d printed PowerCombs for the Hohner 12 and 14 hole diatonics soon. Prototypes are made and tested, just got to do the webpage, video etc
